The most awaited ZHUHAI Airshow is underway. Today, China unveiled its most sophisticated new stealth fighter jet which has been in works for the past 3-4 years. It was certainly a show of muscle during a visit by U.S. President Barack Obama for the Asia-Pacific summit.
The Aviation Industry Corp of China (AVIC) is the manufacture of this aircraft. The company is considered the country’s top aircraft maker and aims to compete with US made F-35.
The J-31 is a twin-engine fighter jet. It is about the same size as the F-35, the U.S. Department of Defense said in a report this year. It conducted a demonstration for the audience. However, the plane was not put on display afterwards although a mock-up version was on show.
AVIC has not revealed any plans to sell this aircraft in international market. Chinese People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) is going to be the primary user of this aircraft.
Nevertheless, the J-31 appears a potent fighter jet and has all the potential to make rapid inroads in the international market – if offered in the future.
After the J-20, the new J-31 is China’s second indigenous stealth fighter. Analysts say having this stealth aircraft will enable China to better project its power as it takes on a more assertive stance in the East China and South China seas.
