India Looking for Bird Detection and Monitoring Radar Systems

To enhance situational awareness and improve flight safety, Indian Ministry of Defense has invited responses by end of September from overseas vendors to supply 45 bird detection and monitoring radar systems, which are required to be installed at Indian Air Force (IAF) bases across the country.

These systems are to be mobile stations, capable of deployment at all altitudes and able to detect large and small birds at distances of 11 km and 6 km respectively.

Currently, bird hits have been responsible for about 9-10% of all IAF accidents over decades. This risk has become more pressing as expanding populations force birds to seek refuge in IAF bases.
